History

Seydikemer, which has been ruled by the Lycians, Persians, Egyptians, Romans and Ottomans since ancient times, contains cultural assets belonging to many civilizations. In addition to 3 ruins open to visitors, there are many archaeological – natural – urban and historical sites (Tlos, Letoon, Pınara, Sidyma) areas and examples of civil architecture in the district.

The name of the district comes from the combination of the words “Seyyit”, which means “Descendant of the Prophet” in the word Seyitler, and “Kemer”, which has been the name of the town for years, inspired by the arch of the historical bridge that connects the two sides of the town. The first life of the Turks in the city began only 22 years after the victory of 1071 Malazgirt, when the Horasan Seyyids settled in the village of Seyitler in 1093. Although Seydikemer’s history as a district is not very old, it is an undeniable fact that it covers a region that stands out with its historical and natural riches.
