KÖYCEĞİZ

Köyceğiz District is a quiet touristic town surrounded by rich natural beauties and citrus groves, at the junction of the Mediterranean and Aegean Regions, at the 60th km of Muğla – Fethiye Highway. The district is in the north of Köyceğiz Lake, from which it takes its name.

Climate

The Mediterranean climate is seen in the coastal part of Köyceğiz, and the continental climate is seen in the mountainous regions. After Rize, the place that receives the most precipitation in Turkey is Köyceğiz.

Transportation

It can be reached by road by following the Muğla-Fethiye highway. Those who land from Muğla to Gökova continue in the direction of Fethiye without leaving Marmaris. After about 30 km, Köyceğiz lake suddenly appears on your right. Köyceğiz is 1 km inland from the main road, by the lake.

Access by air is Dalaman Airport, 32 km from Köyceğiz.

History

 Settlement in this beautiful geography began thousands of years ago. The traces of the first settlement date back to 3400 BC. Later, Scythians, Assyrians, Ionian and Dorians, Persians, Hellenes, Seleykos, Romans, Menteşoğulları and Ottomans settled in these lands. The ancient city of Kaunos, at the point where the lake meets the Mediterranean, was one of the most important port cities at the intersection of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean in the millennium BC.

Today’s Köyceğiz was developed during the Ottoman period.
