Kavaklıdere is located in the north of Muğla province. It is adjacent to Aydın in the north, Menteşe in the east, Menteşe and Yatağan in the south, and Yatağan in the west. 93% of the area of the district is covered with forests and the center is crammed into a small area.

The history of Kavaklıdere district is largely based on oral sources due to the lack of written sources. According to the legend, the name of Kavaklıdere derives from the stream flowing through it and the fact that it is surrounded by plane trees, which the local people call “Poplar”.
It is claimed that the first settlers in the region were Turkmens from Karakeçili Yoruks in the early 17th century. Later, Turkmen families came to the region from Denizli, Denizli-Tavas, Muğla, Uşak-Eşme, Uşak-Karahallı and Kaz Mountains and formed the settled population and settlement at that time. The nomadic culture is still kept alive in weddings and plateau festivals.
