HISTORY: There is no definite information about when the first settlements started in Muğla, a city that has hosted ancient civilizations since ancient times and preserved its importance in every era.

According to some sources, the history of Muğla along with the region goes back to 3,000 BC. It has been suggested that the region was named Caria (Caria) because the Carians (Carians) settled in the first ages – inspired by a commander named ‘Kar’ who led the tribes that came around 3,400 BC.

In some sources, it is mentioned that the Hittites were the first to settle in this region, the known history of the province began with the Hittites, and they called this region Lugga. However, it is known that the city was located in the region that used to be called Inner Caria. It is also considered that Caria was a civilization known to the Hittites in 2,000 BC (it is known that the Hittites or Etiler, one of the important civilizations that established a state in the Anatolian geography in Antiquity, migrated to Anatolia in 2,000 BC and established dominance over the local Hatti principalities). If taken into consideration, it can be said that the first settlement in Muğla goes back to the Carians.

In today’s geography, the region, which starts from Söke, Aydın, Nazilli in the north and ends where the Dalaman Stream flows into the sea in the south, has been known as Caria (Caria) throughout the ages; It was neighbor to the regions under the rule of Lydia (Lydia) in the north, Lycia (Lycia) in the south and Phrygia (Phrygia) in Anatolia.
